The AH-1T SeaCobra was a twin-engine development of the AH-1J, built primarily for the United States Marine Corps in the late 1970s. It incorporated the more powerful Pratt & Whitney T400-CP-400 twin-pack turboshaft engine and an extended tail boom and rotor system borrowed from the Bell 212, which improved lift and handling in hot-and-high conditions. Designed as an interim step before more advanced variants, the AH-1T retained the narrow fuselage of earlier Cobras but offered greater reliability and range, while also providing compatibility with shipboard operations-a key requirement for the Marines.
Beyond performance upgrades, the AH-1T introduced the capacity to carry the BGM-71 TOW anti-tank guided missile, significantly expanding its offensive capability against armored threats compared to earlier gun- and rocket-armed Cobras. This gave the Marines a versatile platform that could perform close air support, anti-armor missions, and escort duties for amphibious operations. Although it would later be eclipsed by the advanced AH-1W Super Cobra, the AH-1T marked an important transitional model in the Cobra lineage, cementing the Marine Corps' reliance on twin-engine attack helicopters optimized for naval deployment.
