On 2011 the German Ministry of Defence has announced plans for the Luftwaffe taking over of the Heavy Transport Helicopter force. 64 CH-53GS/GA are to remain in service at Laupheim while the others units will be disbanded. The number to be upgraded was reduced to 40 in 2012
