In January 2018 was announced that the Ministry of Defense and Airbus Spain will relaunch NH90 program of the naval variant as a replacement for the Sea King fleet. The first seven for the navy were planned to belong from Albacete batch-2 that should start to be delivered by 2023
The MSPT is the maritime transport amphibious variant and is based on the Army GSPA Standard 3. First flew on December 15, 2023 in Airbus Germany Donauworth facility and is expected to be completed by Airbus Spain Albacete by June 2024 to begin replacing the SH-60F and AB212 helicopters.
On May 29, 2025 took place the official handover of the first two helicopters.
