The Italian Carabinieri introduced the Leonardo AW139 into service in 2021 as part of a modernization effort to replace older AB412 and AB412HP helicopters used for law-enforcement and homeland-security missions. Operated by the Carabinieri’s 1st Helicopter Unit (1° Nucleo Elicotteri) and subsequent aviation centers, the AW139 provides a multi-role platform for surveillance, public order, rapid intervention, environmental protection, and support to ground units across Italy. Equipped with advanced avionics, electro-optical/infrared sensors, searchlights, and communication suites, the AW139 enhances the Carabinieri’s ability to conduct day-and-night patrols, search-and-rescue missions, and operations in complex terrain, including mountainous regions. The type’s speed, endurance, and payload capacity have significantly expanded the Carabinieri’s airborne capabilities since its introduction into the fleet.
