Transferred from the Army. Originally built by VFW in the 1970s and upgraded by Eurocopter from 1999.
Airbus Helicopters to upgrade 40 to the CH-53GA standard. These and other 26 of the G/GS type to remain in service until 2030.

Replacement

On December 2017, German Air Force "Schwerer Transporthubschrauber" (STH) program was approved. Plans to buy 45 to 60 new heavy-lift helicopters expecting to issue request for information by second half of 2018. Contract expected to be awarded in mid-2020 and deliveries to begin in 2023.
