Argentine Government, January 09, 2023 - The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, in charge of Juan Cabandié, has a large helicopter that arrived from Canada and will maintain its base at the Bariloche airport to collaborate in Patagonia with the fight against fire sources during the summer season.
In this way, the aircraft is now available to operate in the fight against forest fires that may occur in the summer together with the rest of the air resources arranged by the National Fire Management Service (SNMF, Plan Nacional de Manejo del Fuego).
It should be noted that the Boeing CH-47D Chinook helicopter already served in operations to fight forest fires in countries in the region such as Bolivia and Chile.
The Chinook can drop close to 10,000 liters of water, which is why it represents the helicopter with the largest water drop capacity in the world.
The articulation materialized from the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the national Ministry of the Environment and the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) as a framework for cooperation and government-to-government (G2G) contracting. Likewise, the aircraft has the authorization of the National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC) to provide this service in the country, which grants the corresponding security scope.
The service is provided with pilots, mechanics and specialized personnel for firefighting. The expected term of operation is 120 days during the 2023 summer season.
The director of the SNMF, Alberto Seufferheld, and the coordinator of the Patagonia Region Carolina Juárez, were present at the airport for the arrival.
