The H160 is part of a new generation of medium twin-engine helicopters developed by Airbus Helicopters. It incorporates a number of advanced features, including the Blue Edge five-bladed main rotor for reduced noise and improved lift, and the Helionix avionics suite aimed at enhancing pilot situational awareness.
The public service certification adds to the H160's existing type certificate for civil operations, expanding its operational scope. According to Airbus, the certification enables operators to perform missions under public service regulations, which differ from commercial air transport rules and are often required for government-contracted tasks.
Airbus stated that the public service variant of the H160 benefits from the same core design as the civil version, but includes mission-specific modifications and equipment configurations, depending on the operator’s needs.
With this certification in place, the H160 moves closer to fulfilling its multi-role potential in the parapublic sector, complementing its presence in offshore transport and corporate aviation.
Launch Customer
France's Gendarmerie Nationale will be the launch customer utilizing the H160 for various law enforcement missions, with deliveries originally planned ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The H160s designated for the Gendarmerie will be equipped with the Safran Euroflir 410 electro-optical system, winching, and fast roping capabilities. Airbus Helicopters and the Gendarmerie's Air Force Command are collaborating to develop a tailored mission management system for these aircraft .
This acquisition is part of a broader initiative to modernize the Gendarmerie's aerial fleet, replacing older models like the AS350 Écureuil. The H160s are expected to enhance the Gendarmerie's operational capabilities, particularly in tactical deployments involving units such as the GIGN .
The contract for these helicopters was finalized by France’s DGA defense procurement agency on behalf of the Interior Ministry, as part of a stimulus plan to support the national aeronautical industry first announced by the French government in 2020 .
With this order, France becomes the first country to deploy the H160 for law enforcement missions, marking a significant step in the aircraft's integration into public service roles.
