Leonardo, June 02, 2018 - Arlington, Virginia - Leonardo Helicopters, the only helicopter sponsor at the Patuxent River Air Expo, will be displaying its advanced AW119 Ke helicopter at the air show June 2nd and 3rd at the Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Maryland.

Leonardo Helicopters is pursuing the U.S. Navy’s advanced helicopter training replacement program with its TH-119.

The TH-119, made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a superior commercial off-the-shelf single engine platform promoting low procurement and operational costs coupled with state-of-the-art technology and a robust design, setting it apart as an advanced military training helicopter, including:

Genesys Aerospace cockpit avionics with large dual displays providing instructor’s greater training flexibility.
An open architecture avionics system that allows for growth to future enhanced training and/or future FAA compliance.
Options for either a VFR or IFR FAA certification to meet customer requirements.

A five-fuel cell option that provides more than five hours of flight time with pressure refueling port allowing for less downtime to refuel and enables “hot” refueling while the engine is still running.

A unique cabin configuration with an additional 180-degree adjustable trainer observation seat at the base of the instrument panel giving the occupant a full view of cockpit operations. Two additional students can be seated on the cabin bench.

Night Vision (NVG) compatible cockpit and cabin with high-visibility cockpit doors and a low-profile instrument panel ensure maximum visibility from the cockpit.

Re-enforced skids with replaceable skid shoes support the multiple repetitions of essential touchdown training maneuvers.
Ability to provide a cargo hook and rescue hoist to help support advanced training events.

“The TH119 has been designed to be a true training helicopter from the inside out while meeting and exceeding the demanding requirements in U.S. Navy and military helicopter training programs,” said Andrew Gappy, director of U.S. Navy, Marine and federal programs for Leonardo Helicopters. “We are proud to offer this safe, reliable and inexpensive solution to support this important mission for many years,” Gappy said.

The Leonardo TH-119 is working towards IFR certification for 2019 and will be the only commercially available IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) helicopter in its class. Coupled with the fact that the TH-119 has high performance margins that make it a forgiving platform for students to learn basic flight maneuvers as well as advanced flight techniques, makes it the only single engine helicopter to meet the Navy’s mission but allow for growth.

As the U.S. Navy faces increasing challenges to its current training helicopter platforms, the TH-119 helicopter is the best solution for the U.S. Navy at the right time. A premier pilot training aircraft platform built and manufactured in the United States with a reputation as a safe and reliable aircraft widely used around the world.
