HELP Appeal, August 28, 2023 - The HELP Appeal was established to improve helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) by funding life-saving helipads at NHS Hospitals all over the country. Since 2009 the charity has:
- Funded 25 new and the upgrade of 20 NHS hospital helipads. These include 16 Major Trauma Centres.
- Most recently funded new hospital helipads in Scarborough, Manchester, Edinburgh and Campbeltown.
- Funded improvements to hospital helipads in Coventry and Peterborough, which opened in 2022.
- Funding helipads at Sheffield Children’s, Salford and Brighton, which are due to open in 2023.
- Pioneered the introduction and funding of Deck Integrated Fire Fighting System (DIFFS) on rooftop helipads across the country including two in London at King’s College Hospital and St George’s Hospital, and in Manchester and Bristol, which save each NHS hospital around £250,000 every year in firefighting costs.Overall, we have funded or are funding DIFFS for 11 hospital helipads.
- Funded helipads at brand new air bases for several air ambulances, including Midlands Air Ambulance; London Air Ambulance, Wiltshire Air Ambulance; Great Western Air Ambulance; Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance, Great North Air Ambulance; Scotland’s Air Ambulance and Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance.
- Funded Critical Care Cars for Air Ambulances around the country.
- Provided £1 million in life-saving funding for the British Association for Immediate Care (BASICS) since 2019, with another £250,000 donation later this year.
- Donated over £40 Million towards 45 helipad projects across the country.
- 50+ planned helipad projects in the pipeline costing £55 million.
- In Scotland alone, we have funded or are funding 14 projects, including in Glasgow, Inverness, Stornoway, Applecross and Mull. Plus provided £200,000 over a four-year period to the Scottish Air Ambulance Service to fund replacement secondary landing sites throughout Scotland.
Robert Bertram, Chief Executive of the HELP Appeal says: “This isn’t just a number. Each landing represents a patient who has been very seriously ill, and stood a much better chance of survival by reaching the Emergency Department as quickly as possible. This is why hospital helipads are vital. By saving time, they help save lives. Please support us today, as we have much more work to do.”
