MD Helicopters traces its lineage back to 1947 as a unit of the Hughes Aircraft Company founded by Howard Hughes. The division officially became Hughes Helicopters in 1955 and achieved global recognition with the development of the Hughes 369, later known as the OH-6 Cayuse, which set 23 world records for speed and endurance. Ownership shifted significantly over the decades: the company was sold to
McDonnell Douglas in 1984, merged with Boeing in 1997, and was later acquired by
MD Helicopters Holdings in 1999.
Following a period of
financial restructuring and bankruptcy protection, the company was acquired in 2022 by a consortium led by Bardin Hill Investment Partners and MB Global Partners, which currently manages its operations.
The company is headquartered and maintains its primary manufacturing facility in Mesa, Arizona, having consolidated its production lines from previous locations like Mexico.
As of 2026, MD Helicopters has revitalized its sales and product roadmap, focusing on strategic upgrades and new models like the six-bladed
MD 564 utility helicopter, which was unveiled at Verticon 2026. Sales have been bolstered by international military contracts, including a 12-unit order from Nigeria for the Cayuse Warrior Plus, and specialized civil sales to organizations like the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Under current leadership, the firm aims for a steady production rate of approximately 50 helicopters per year to support its global fleet of thousands of aircraft.
