Established 1992, the Sociedad de Salvamento y Seguridad Maritima ( SASEMAR ) is the government agency in charged of search and rescue (SAR), combating marine pollution, monitoring and assisting maritime traffic, maritime safety and navigation, tugging and ship assistance, as well as complementary missions on Spanish territorial waters, an area covering 1.5 million square kilometres.
