I trained the original 1 Esqd eA/S squadron of s-58/H-34 pilots in 1966, shortly after the Brazilian Air Force transferred the helicopters to the Brazilian Navy. The Air Force continued to fly the S-2 fixed wing aircraft aboard the Brazilian Aircraft Carrier Minas Gerias. The squadron originally had 6 helicopters, and only a core of approximately 4 officer/pilots received this training. These officers/pilots were tasked to train the remaining officers/pilots in the squadron. Carrier qualifications training was also provided. I had the pleasure of deploying with the squadron for the beginning of the joint US Navy and South American Navies anti submarine exercise.
