Founded in 1949 vsq 7 was a Catalina squadron at Biak (New Guinea). In 1951 vsq was disbanded. In 1955 it was re-established flying Fairey Firefly from Biak until 1952 when the squadron was disbanded again.
15 october 1962 vsq 7 was reformed as the second MLD helicopter unit flying AB-204B (or (I)UH-1, as they were called) from Valkenburg. In 1973 the squadron was moved north to De Kooy. There it was absorbed in MARHELI and is operating the SH-14D Lynx.
7th Squadron provides crew training in NH90 and also performs tests and evaluations for the helicopter and its systems
On 28 June 2022, 7 Squadron was reactivated. This reactivation is the final result of the reorganization of 299 Squadron (Gilze-Rijen) and 7 Squadron (Maritime Air Base De Kooy). This reorganization enables the concentration of our knowledge and expertise in the fields of training and simulation. Both 299 Helicopter Warfare Center (HWC) Squadron and 7 O&S Squadron are the first DHC squadrons to be distributed across two airfields—Gilze-Rijen Air Base and Maritime Air Base De Kooy—thereby further strengthening the bonds within the DHC. The O&S Squadron provides training for both ground and aircrew personnel of the DHC and supports education, training, and Concept Development & Experimentation (CD&E) through simulation resources and expertise. The O&S Squadron ensures focus in training tasks and in the effective use of simulators. At a time when both the quantitative and qualitative staffing of our organization represent our greatest challenge, it is essential that we organize our training as effectively and efficiently as possible. We achieve this by placing training and simulator activities under single, unified leadership within the O&S Squadron. Kind regards, Sergeant Major RC (Rob) van Houwelingen Squadron Sergeant Major 7 O&S Squadron
