Established in 1969, the Dallas Police Department Air Support Unit began operations with Hughes 300 helicopters before transitioning to the Bell 47 and later the Bell 206 JetRanger, which served as its primary aircraft for nearly 40 years. Despite budget cuts and a temporary grounding in 2017, the unit was revived with community support, moved into a new headquarters at Dallas Executive Airport in 2020, and began a major modernization programme in 2025-2026, replacing its legacy Bell fleet with Airbus H125 helicopters while expanding its unmanned aerial capabilities.
