History Tracking
In October 2014 NLA commenced operations of a national Danish helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) program, opening its base at Billund Airport.

Located at Firhøjevej 20, 7190 Billund, the air-ambulance station is equipped with an Airbus H135 helicopter and serves critically ill or injured patients in time-sensitive situations, such as major traumas, strokes and cardiac events.

Annually the Billund base carries out approximately 1,300 missions, forming one of four HEMS bases operated by NLA in Denmark under contract to the country’s regional healthcare authorities.
Before 2014, Denmark’s helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) was operated by Falck DRF Luftambulance A/S, a partnership between Falck and Germany’s DRF Luftrettung. The company began providing HEMS operations in 2009 under a government contract, using EC135 helicopters stationed in Billund, Ringsted, and Skive. When the new national tender was awarded in 2014, Norsk Luftambulanse (NLA) succeeded Falck DRF, establishing a unified, modernized HEMS system across Denmark with bases at Billund, Skive, Ringsted, and Saltum.
