South Yorkshire Police management was never convinced of the benefits to its community of the National Police Air Service being created. After NPAS was formed, a series of resource reductions (aircraft, bases and personnel) were introduced in response to a 14 per cent cut in its budget. The South Yorkshire Police Air Operations Unit was an early casualty, when its operations from Sheffield City Heliport ceased in early 2016.
