RAF Alconbury, located in Cambridgeshire, England, was established in 1938 as a Royal Air Force bomber station on the eve of the Second World War. During WWII it operated a range of RAF bomber and reconnaissance units before transitioning to United States Army Air Forces control in 1942, becoming an important base for American air operations over occupied Europe. After the war, Alconbury remained a key U.S. Air Force installation throughout the Cold War, hosting reconnaissance aircraft such as the RB-47 Stratojet and later tactical fighter and intelligence units.
Flying operations ceased in 1992 as the station transitioned away from active air operations toward intelligence and support roles. RAF Alconbury’s military service effectively ended in 1995, when the U.S. Air Force withdrew and the base was returned to the UK Ministry of Defence and designated for redevelopment.
Following the end of active military use, the site was redeveloped as Alconbury Weald, a large-scale regeneration project blending heritage preservation with modern commercial, residential and environmental uses. While no longer an operational airbase, many historic structures—including runways, hangars and control buildings—have been retained as part of the redevelopment, reflecting the site’s aviation legacy. Today, Alconbury Weald is positioned as a sustainable community and business hub, hosting offices, technology firms and green initiatives, while preserving RAF Alconbury’s historical significance as a long-standing symbol of Anglo-American military cooperation.
