    History of this Location

Originally established as a civil airport on Muharraq Island in 1932, it was upgraded by the Royal Air Force as renamed RAF Bahrain in 1943. Post WWII, it was considered a peaceful posting, but in Jun 1961, the tempo of operations stepped up when it was the main land base for Operation Vantage until Aug. It was renamed RAF Muharraq in 1963 and the RAF left the base in 1971.
