At the beginning of WWII, a site to the NE of Swindon was selected for an ad hoc camp. In 1946, the first steps in the post-war structure of Army technical training were taken, when technical schools previously at Bury (Fire Control systems), Chobham (Tank Technology) and Stoke (Artillery Equipment) were consolidated at Shrivenham. In 1953, the Royal Military College of Science was officially opened.
In 2004 the RMCS was disbanded and was incorporated into the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom.
