The Leonardo AW139 was selected September 2018 as the Boeing MH-139 to replaced the UH-1N (Bell 212) Twin Huey.
The MH-139A is the first service-unique helicopter acquired by the U.S. Air Force and the first aircraft ever acquired by Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC, former SAC).
First 13 pre-production aircraft will be used for the Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) with the first one delivered on December 19, 2019 in an official reception at Duke Field, FL where it was unveiled the name MH-139A Grey Wolf. Low-rate initial production decision was expected for September 2021.
The 40th HS at Malmstrom AFB was announced to be the first operational unit and to receive the new helicopters in 2021/2022 followed by F.E. Warren and Minot. Andrews AFB will be the fourth operational unit, in this case for VIP mission around Washington, DC.
The 908th Wing at Maxwell AFB will become the training unit for the MH-139. Since January 23, 2023, 908th maintainers have spent a minimum of 30 days each watching first-hand; learning tactics, techniques, procedures, and best practices, on how to effectively maintain AW139s from the Chevron Corp in Picayune, Mississippi.
In March 2023, USAF authorized the first 13 production aircraft.

The USAF announced an Initial Low Rate Production contract for 13 MH-139 in March 2023, with an expectation of eventually procuring a fleet of 84 airframes. The basic AW139 airframes are being built by Leonardo in Philadelphia and fitted out as MH-139A for their mission, by prime contractor Boeing.
The first operational MH-139A was delivered to Malmstrom AFB in March 2024, but in that same month the US Air Force cut its order by half, reducing the program to 42 helicopters through FY 2029.
The Training Unit, the 908th Airlift Wing at Maxwell AFB, accepted its first MH-139A on May 31, 2024
The first serial production MH-139A was delivered to Malmstrom on August 5, 2024.
Boeing delivered the 9th, 10th and 11th production helicopters to Maxwell AFB 908th Wing in September 2025 as part of Lot 1.
As of October 2025, the U.S. Air Force has an order for 34 MH-139A helicopters, covering Lots 1 through 3, a portion of which have already been delivered.
In February 2026, a new order raised the total number of MH-139A helicopters under contract to 38. Boeing had delivered 21 Grey Wolves, including 12 under the low-rate initial production (LRIP) contract awarded in 2023.
