Twelve S-70B-1 Seahawk helicopters were delivered between 1988 and 1990 in two batches for operation from the Santa Maria class frigates, the Spanish-built variant of the U.S. Navy's Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigates.
In November 2012, Spain announced plans to acquire the first two former U.S. Navy SH-60F helicopters from AMARG for the embarked tactical transport role. These aircraft entered Spanish Navy service in 2017. Four additional helicopters were acquired in 2018, followed by two more in 2023, completing the planned fleet of eight SH-60Fs. Initially operated by the 5th Squadron, the helicopters were transferred to the 10th Squadron in 2026 following the retirement of the SH-3 Sea King fleet.
