  • The Spanish Navy takes delivery of the second helicopter in the AB212 Life Extension Program

Sener, March 29, 2016 - In the framework of the FIDAE International Air & Space Fair, the SENER engineering and technology group announced the recent delivery of the second Agusta Bell helicopter 212 (AB212) to the Spanish Ministry of Defense’s DGAM (Directorate General of Armament and Material).

This is part of a modernization project that SENER is carrying out in a Temporary Joint Venture with INAER, the leading helicopter operator in Spain. The program involves lengthening the operational lives of a total of seven aircraft from the Spanish Navy’s Third Squadron by at least 15 years.

The life extension of the AB212 helicopters is one of the main projects that SENER will be exhibiting at FIDAE, as it can be adapted for other users of this kind of helicopters or similar ones. A 1:1 scale model of the modernized cockpit can be seen at SENER’s booth, where information about other projects is also available.

This program allows to extend the operational life of these helicopters by at least another 15 years, by incorporating advances in equipment and avionics, as well as new capacities such as radar, a night vision system, protection and self-defense systems, etc. that are needed to operate effectively in ever more demanding national and international contexts.

This life extension program, as well as completely replacing the electrical system and the analogue cockpit for a completely digital one, involves the incorporation of state-of-the-art mission systems such as EFIS, EO/IR radar, Automatic Identification System (AIS), GPS navigation system, TAWS, Tactical Mission Controller (TMC), cargo crane, modifications to the auxiliary fuel tanks, a missile approach warning system (MAWS), a ballistic protection system in the flight and passenger cabin, armored and anti-crash seats for the crew, and defense weapon systems. It also includes the addition of plug-in technology that will allow the helicopters to be quickly reconfigured for new missions.

This way, the helicopters are ready to operate without restriction in controlled military and civilian airspaces, in accordance with the requirement of new regulations, as well as giving them self-protection and defense systems that allow them to be deployed in multinational missions with a low-medium threat level.

Today, after nearly 50 years in the field of aerospace engineering, SENER is a reputable supplier of equipment, systems integration and engineering services for the Aeronautics and Vehicles, Space and Defense sectors.
