First 100 Days of ADAC Air Rescue “Christoph 67” Station

ADAC, October 24, 2024 - Itzehoe/Munich, Germany - Since commencing operations on July 1 at the new ADAC air rescue station “Hungriger Wolf” in Hohenlockstedt near Itzehoe (district of Steinburg), the crew led by Station Manager Sascha Richter has already completed 388 missions with the rescue helicopter “Christoph 67.” This represents an average of nearly four deployments per day.

The figures highlight the critical importance of helicopter emergency medical services. In life-threatening situations, every minute counts, and rapid assistance is often only possible by air.

Approximately 31 percent of missions involved accidents during leisure activities, sports, or road traffic incidents. Cardiovascular emergencies, including heart attacks, accounted for 27 percent of callouts. Neurological emergencies such as strokes made up 13 percent, while acute respiratory conditions, including severe asthma attacks, represented six percent of missions.

Most operations were conducted within Schleswig-Holstein, with seven percent taking place in neighboring Lower Saxony. The majority of deployments occurred in the districts of Steinburg, Rendsburg-Eckernförde, Pinneberg, Dithmarschen, and North Frisia.

Until construction of the permanent station – commissioned by the Ministry of Justice and Health of Schleswig-Holstein – is completed, the team is operating from a fully equipped interim facility. The state mandate requires that the new air rescue station be built and operated according to the highest environmental and sustainability standards.

“Christoph 67” is the newest and 38th station in the ADAC Air Rescue network.

A reserve helicopter is now also stationed in Hohenlockstedt to support the three northern ADAC bases: Christoph 26, Christoph 67, and Christoph Hansa. The location is strategically suited for a backup aircraft equipped with a rescue hoist, enabling operations in Germany’s coastal regions and enhancing capabilities near the North Sea. The interim hangar for this reserve helicopter is scheduled for completion in October.

Operational readiness is maintained daily from sunrise (no earlier than 7:00 a.m.) until sunset.

The aircraft deployed as “Christoph 67” is a state-of-the-art Airbus H145 rescue helicopter. It is capable of dual-use operations, serving both primary emergency missions and inter-hospital intensive care transfers.

Each mission is carried out by a three-person crew consisting of a pilot, an emergency physician, and a HEMS technical crew member (TC HEMS). A total of 21 personnel are assigned to the Hohenlockstedt station.

Alerting is coordinated through the new centralized dispatch system of the Integrated Control Center in Kiel. This innovative air rescue dispatch model was introduced simultaneously with the launch of “Christoph 67” on July 1, enabling centralized coordination of air rescue missions across the entire federal state of Schleswig-Holstein.
