FARNBOROUGH, UK – Anduril Industries and Archer Aviation have unveiled a jointly developed autonomous vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft platform designed for both defense and commercial applications.
During the Farnborough International Airshow, Anduril presented Thunder, a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft derived from the shared platform and intended to enhance the combat capabilities of current and future crewed attack and assault aircraft.
The companies describe the new platform as a new class of autonomous vertical lift aircraft combining the speed, range, payload capacity and operating costs required for both military and civilian missions. Archer is expected to announce the first commercial operators of the platform later this week.
Thunder is based on a dual-use aircraft architecture jointly developed by Archer and Anduril, adapting technologies pioneered in the commercial eVTOL sector into a purpose-built military design. The aircraft features a hybrid-electric propulsion system that combines extended range and endurance with optimized power management throughout all phases of flight.
The design also incorporates Optimum-Speed Tiltrotors (OSTR), which continuously adjust rotor RPM to maximize efficiency across different flight regimes. According to the companies, the system reduces fuel consumption during cruise while lowering the aircraft's acoustic signature during low-altitude operations.
The tiltrotor configuration enables vertical takeoff and landing while providing efficient wingborne cruise flight, allowing operations from austere or runway-independent locations without the range limitations typically associated with conventional helicopters.
The modular platform has been designed to accommodate a variety of heavy payloads for both defense and commercial missions. It builds upon Archer's experience in developing and flight-testing electric air taxi technologies, with the companies emphasizing rapid design, manufacturing and testing capabilities.

The development team has already completed multiple test flights using full-scale surrogate aircraft to validate key systems that will support Thunder's operational performance. The first flight of the production-configured Thunder aircraft is planned for 2027.
