SPAES GmbH & Co. KG, June 24, 2024 - In a recent project, SPAES completed a NVIS (Night Vision Imaging Systems) certification of preinstalled tactical radios in a MD 902 Helicopter for a customer in its own EASA Part 21J Design Organisation.
This certification ensures that the radios are fully compatible with night vision equipment and that the helicopter can operate during nighttime missions.
To achieve this certification, SPAES installed NVIS filters on the tactical radios, including the Ascom SE 550, Motorola MTP3550, and Motorola MTM800/5400 models. These radios are placed in the center console of the cockpit to provide optimal accessibility and usability for the crew.
To validate the effectiveness of the NVIS integration, a NVIS ground test was conducted. This involved testing the radios under simulated night flight conditions to ensure they met all operational requirements and standards for NVIS compatibility. To provide accurate assessments under varying light intensities, the ground evaluation setup created a controlled environment completely sealed off from external light sources. This realistic testing scenario produced reliable results that mirrored real-world conditions.
Moreover, SPAES assessed the compatibility of Night Vision Goggles with the aircraft's cockpit lighting. By identifying and addressing any potential issues, SPAES enhanced the safety and operational capabilities for pilots using NVGs and ensured readability of instruments and displays without compromise.
