The Iranian Navy has its roots in antiquity with the Persian fleet of Cyrus the Great and Xerxes. A more modern version was created in the 1930s but following its internal Islamic Revolution, a later, major reform in 2007 split maritime matters between the Iranian Navy and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Navy.

The Iranian Navy is responsible for operations in the Gulf of Oman, the Caspian Sea and worldwide waters excluding the Persian Gulf. It shares responsibilities for the Strait of Hormuz with the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Navy.

Major locations are:

• HQ - Tehran
• 1st Naval District - Bandar-e Abbas
• 2nd Naval District - Bushehr
• 3rd Naval District - Chah Bahar (on the Gulf of Oman)
• 4th Naval District - Bandar Anzali (on the Caspian Sea).
