Established in October 1979, CareFlite is a nonprofit air medical transport provider based in North and Central Texas and is recognized as the oldest joint-use air medical program in the United States. Headquartered at Grand Prairie Municipal Airport, the organization operates under a cooperative governance model, with a board representing several major regional healthcare systems, including Baylor Scott & White Health, Methodist Health System, Parkland Health, Texas Health Resources, and JPS Health Network.
CareFlite began operations with a single shared helicopter serving Methodist Dallas Medical Center and Harris Methodist Fort Worth. Over time, it expanded into a multi-modal emergency medical service provider, operating a fleet of Bell helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and a large network of ground ambulances. The organization delivers continuous emergency medical transport services across more than 100 counties and supports specialized missions such as pediatric and neonatal transport. It has also played a pioneering role in regional pre-hospital care, including the early adoption of whole blood transport on air ambulances in the Dallas–Fort Worth area.
