SEMSA is a Nevada-based private, nonprofit organization founded in 2000 to support ambulance and medical transport services across underserved communities. Its first major expansion came in 2005, when Lassen County, California’s ambulance provider suddenly ceased operations and SEMSA was asked to step in. The organization secured a 10-year contract to serve the rural county, which was renewed in 2015.
In 2006, RIGGS Ambulance Service in Merced County, California, sought SEMSA’s help with its daily operations. SEMSA modernized and strengthened the service, eventually becoming its sole owner when RIGGS won a new 10-year exclusive ambulance contract—renewed again in 2020. Today, SEMSA continues to deliver high-quality EMS in Merced County while running innovative programs such as a Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) team, PulsePoint community alerts, and pit-crew CPR training for co-responders.
