Arleigh Burke class

The Arleigh Burke-class destroyers represent the backbone of the U.S. Navy's surface combatant fleet, designed as highly capable multi-mission warships centered around the Aegis Combat System. Their development began in the 1980s to create a more cost-effective Aegis-equipped vessel compared to the Ticonderoga-class cruisers, while also incorporating lessons learned, such as a return to all-steel construction for improved survivability.

Named after Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, a distinguished World War II and Korean War veteran, the lead ship, USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51), was laid down in December 1988 and commissioned on July 4, 1991, with Admiral Burke himself present at the ceremony.

Since their introduction, the Arleigh Burke class has seen continuous production and evolution, with successive "Flights" (Flight I, Flight II, Flight IIA, and Flight III) introducing significant upgrades in weaponry, sensors, and electronic systems. These destroyers are equipped with vertical launching systems (VLS) for a diverse array of missiles, enabling anti-air, anti-submarine, anti-surface, and land-strike operations.

Their robust design, emphasis on stealth technology, and the advanced Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System have allowed them to operate in high-threat environments and participate in numerous global operations, from enforcing no-fly zones to anti-piracy missions and ballistic missile defense. The class holds the distinction of having the longest production run of any U.S. Navy surface combatant, with new vessels still being built and older ones receiving life extensions due to their enduring relevance and adaptability.
