A civilian and later, military flying school had existed at the site and was expanded in 1911. After a brief closure, the military school re-opened toward the end of 1914 when it became clear that the Great War was not going to be over quickly.
In 1932 it was expanded again and became an Air Base with the formation of 36e Escadre d observation (36th Observation Wing).
The Armee de l Air closed its operations on 3 Jul 1972 and BA119 was no more; although the ALAT remained at the site.
