The first Smalls lighthouse was a hexagonal wooden platform, supported on 40‘ Welsh oak pillars, by Henry Whiteside in 1776. A huge storm in 1831 damaged the platform and repairs were needed. It served for 85 years.
The current granite block tower was completed in 1861, based on a design by John Smeaton. The tower was automated in 1987.
