Westland Wessex HC.2

1964 · Twin-engine turbine helicopter

The Wessex HC.2 was an improved version of the Wessex HAS.1, designed for battlefield tactical support. To achieve the lift required (armed troops, resupply and significant underslung loads), Westland redesigned the nose, rotor head and engine compartment to accommodate twin turbines and provide single engine operation in the event of engine failure or battle damage. The HAS.1 anti-submarine sensors and equipment were removed and the whole airframe was strengthened to cope with the greater power, loads and potentially more violent manouvering associated with assault insertions.
