723 Squadron EC135 Fleet Reaches 50,000 Flight Hours

Royal Australian Navy 723 Squadron reaches 50,000 flying hours with its EC135T2+ helicopter fleet, supporting training for Naval and Army aircrews.

The Eurocopter EC135T2+ was introduced to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in September 2016 as the primary training platform for the Helicopter Aircrew Training System (HATS). Operated by 723 Squadron at HMAS Albatross in Nowra, New South Wales, the fleet of 15 aircraft provides a joint training environment for both Navy and Army pilots, replacing the aging AS350 Squirrel and Bell 206 Kiowa. These modern twin-engine helicopters feature a glass cockpit, high visibility, and advanced digital flight control systems designed to prepare aircrew for advanced operational types like the MH-60R Seahawk. Beyond shore-based instruction, the EC135 is utilized for essential shipboard training, with first-of-class flight trials conducted aboard the training vessel MV Sycamore starting in late 2017.

Australia Dept.Defence, March 01, 2026 - At HMAS Albatross in Nowra, 723 Squadron has soared past a remarkable aviation milestone, recording an impressive 50,000 flying hours on the EC135 helicopter fleet. This achievement marks another proud chapter for a squadron that has been shaping ADF aviators since 1952.

The achievement represents far more than hours in the air. It reflects the combined efforts of a dedicated and diverse team who enable safe and effective flying operations every day.

Over the years, 723 Squadron has delivered thousands of training sorties, supporting the development of Navy and Army aircrew who will go on to serve in operational aviation units across Australia and overseas.

These flying hours represent the squadron’s unwavering commitment to producing highly skilled aviators capable of meeting the evolving needs of the ADF.

Central to this success are the instructors who mentor and shape each new generation of aircrew. Their professionalism, technical expertise and relentless focus on safety ensure trainees receive excellent instruction throughout their aviation journey.

Equally vital are the squadron’s industry partners, Boeing Defence Australia and Thales, whose technical excellence keeps the EC135 aircraft and simulators mission-ready year-round. Their behind-the-scenes work forms the backbone of safe flight operations, enabling high training output and a dependable flying program.

Supporting all of this is the squadron’s dedicated team of operations staff, administrators and unit personnel who keep 723 Squadron running efficiently every day. Their efforts ensure that schedules align, member needs are supported and the training mission remains on track.
