When established, JHS will train all Army pilots and loadmasters, as well as all Navy Pilots, Observers (now known as Maritime Aviation Warfare Officer), Aircrew and Sensor Operators.

Air 9000 Phase 7, the procurement of a new Helicopter Aircrew Training System (HATS) will provide future rotary wing training needs of the Australian Defence Force and replaced both the Army Kiowa and Navy AS350BA Squirrel.

On October 2007, HMAS Albatross at Nowra in NSW, was selected as the location of the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) joint helicopter school.

From 2016, civilian contractors Boeing Defence Australia and Thales will teach the future instructors how to operate the new EC135 training helicopter and the three full-flight simulators that make up the school's Helicopter Aircrew Training System. The Joint Helicopter School will train up to 105 Navy and Army aircrew each year.
