From 2010, an initiative to develop a National Police Air Service (
NPAS ) is underway. It seeks to encourage central reporting, regional co-ordination amongst forces yet deliver savings and benefits locally.
NPAS came into existence on 1 Oct 2012.
In Jan 2026, the UK Home Office announced plans to achieve further savings to divert funds to front line policing by dramatically reducing the number of Police Forces in England and Wales from 43. Details have yet to emerge.
