HC-9 flew the HH-3A Sea King and during its existence was the only US Navy squadron whose mission was to provide Rescue and Recovery of Aircrews in a hostile environment and Insertion and Extraction of Special Forces wherever needed.
From 1990 their mission was assumed by HSC-4 and HCS-5
