Formed in May 1941 as an RAF unit at RAF Acklington in Northumbria, UK. Disbanded at Predannack in Cornwall on 1 Sep 1945. Reformed in Jul 1972 as VT406 at CFB Shearwater with a mix of Sea Kings and fixed-wing Trackers for maritime operational training. When the Trackers left for CFB Summerside in summer 1981, the unit was redesignated HT406.
