A fixed wing maritime unit from 1942 to 1957, RNZAF 6 Squadron was reformed from the Naval Support Flight of RNZAF 3 Squadron in 2005.
The SH-2G(I) Seasprite was introduced in late 2015, replacing the earlier SH-2F. These helicopters are operated by RNZN aircrew, taking advantage of the base and maintenance facilities of RNZAF Whenuapai engineers and other ground support staff.
