The 4ª Sezione Volo Elicotteri (4th Helicopter Flight Section) of the Italian Coast Guard was established on 17 July 2018 to expand the service's aerial coverage in the central Mediterranean. Based at Decimomannu Air Base in southern Sardinia, the unit operates Leonardo AW139 helicopters in support of the Coast Guard's institutional missions, including maritime search and rescue (SAR), medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), environmental protection, maritime surveillance, fisheries inspection, and the monitoring of protected marine resources. The section shares Decimomannu Air Base with the Italian Air Force's 80º Centro SAR, improving the availability of rotary-wing assets for emergency response and maritime operations in the waters surrounding Sardinia.
