Sarasota County Sheriffs Office

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) is the primary law-enforcement agency serving Sarasota County, Florida, a coastal region on the state’s Gulf Coast known for its urban communities, barrier islands, and extensive waterways. Headquartered in Sarasota, the SCSO is responsible for policing unincorporated areas of the county as well as providing countywide services such as corrections, court security, marine patrol, and emergency response coordination. The agency plays a key role in hurricane preparedness and disaster response, reflecting the region’s exposure to severe weather and its growing population.

The SCSO Aviation Unit supports law-enforcement and public-safety operations through airborne patrol, search and rescue, suspect tracking, traffic monitoring, and disaster response. Operating helicopters equipped with advanced sensors, including electro-optical/infrared systems and night-vision capabilities, the unit provides rapid situational awareness over both urban areas and coastal waters. The aviation service is also frequently integrated with marine and emergency services, enhancing coordination during rescues, missing-person searches, and major incidents across Sarasota County.

The SCSO Aviation Unit operates from Venice Municipal Airport in Venice, Florida. This is their primary base and hangar location for the helicopter fleet and is centrally positioned in Sarasota County for efficient response across the area. In 2024, the county approved about $4 million for improvements to the aviation unit’s facilities at the airport. This included a larger concrete pad for safer takeoffs/landings, expanded hangar space, additional offices, and climate-controlled storage to protect equipment from coastal humidity and salt air. By late 2024, funding was allocated for a new 10,000-square-foot hangar addition adjacent to the existing 7,000-square-foot one. As of 2025, the current hangar houses a Bell 407GX and the new Bell 429.
