UN Security Council Resolution 186 recommended the formation of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus on 4 Mar 1964. The Force became operational on 27 Mar 1964 as a joint civilian / military security corps. After the military action in 1974, which resulted in the Partition of Cyprus, a further UN resolution (367: 1975) strengthened its mandate. After improvements in relations between the two communities, the force was restructured and reduced in size by UN SCR 1568, effective 1 Jan 2005.
The UNFICYP Flight has been made up of long term national contributions, initially by the UK Army Air Corps UNFICYP Flight until Sep 1994 and by the Argentinean FAA Chipre since then.
