1975 /YW-12 I was the crew chief of this 46 during the evac of Saigon (Op Frequent Wind). The original pilots scheduled were LT. MICHAEL SHEA, and CAPT. WILLIAM NYSTUL, but there was a last minute pilot change. Lt Joe Rogish was the HAC, dont remember co-pilot. We had some com problems with USS Blueridge (LCC-19) as they wouldnt clear the deck so we could refuel, called mayday bingo fuel, still wouldnt move Air America Huey fwd so we could land. So with fuel gauges bouncing off of zero and 16 passengers on board we put in the south china sea. Water and air taxied as close as possible to fantail of the Blueridge, til they cleared the deck. A happy landing was had by all except the air boss who wouldnt clear the deck so we could land. Sgt Joe A. Slayden 1971-1975 | |||
