Taken out of use around 1993, as surplus to requirements, the Brent SPAR became notorious in the UK as an icon of environmental protection due to Shells initial plan for disposal (dumping it at sea). Eventually, it was towed to Erfjord, the upperworks were scrapped but the lower parts were sectioned up, cleaned and used to construct a new ferry facility for the Stavanger Port Authority.
