On December 2014, the Indian navy selected the S-70B Seahawk for its Multi-Role Helicopter requirement. At least 24 helicopters were planned as the Sea King replacement.
On November 2018, Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) issued an 18-months valid Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) to obtain 24 multi-role helicopters (MRH) and a Letter of Request (LoR) worth $2 billion was sent to the US Government for a "fast-track" acquisition of the MH-60R Romeo helicopter.
On April 2019, US State Department authorized the purchase.
