The MD902 Explorer gained prominence in the United Kingdom air ambulance sector during the late 1990s and early 2000s, famously serving as the primary aircraft for London's Air Ambulance for over 25 years. Chosen for its revolutionary NOTAR (No Tail Rotor) technology, the aircraft offered a smaller footprint and reduced noise profile, making it uniquely suited for landings in confined urban spaces like parks or cordoned-off road junctions.

Throughout much of its service life, the MD902 fleet in the UK was largely supported by Specialist Aviation Services (SAS), which acted as both the primary maintainer and operator for charities including Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Essex & Herts Air Ambulance. However, the platform's fate was ultimately sealed by persistent logistics and supply chain challenges, as the lack of manufacturer after-sales support made sourcing critical spare parts increasingly difficult. Consequently, the type has been systematically retired across the country; Essex & Herts Air Ambulance retired their last MD902 in early 2024, and London's Air Ambulance officially replaced its iconic red Explorers with a new fleet of Airbus H135s in October 2024.
