HELP Appeal, August 11, 2024 - Over 300 air ambulance landings have been made at Ipswich Hospital after the HELP Appeal covered the entire cost in 2018 to build a helipad with lighting next to the Emergency Department to allow helicopters to land during the day and in darkness hours.
The helipad allows hospital and air ambulance teams to quickly transfer critically ill patients into the hospital, or to other specialist centres. Previously, it took between 15 and 20 minutes to reach the Emergency Department from the hospital’s old helipad, which was at the back of a field at Copleston High School.
East Anglian Air Ambulance, Magpas Air Ambulance and Essex & Herts Air Ambulance regularly use the helipad.
Robert Bertram, Chief Executive of the HELP Appeal, explains the significant impact of the helipad: “When a patient urgently needs specialist hospital treatment, having to add another 20 minutes onto to their journey to hospital could have a serious impact on their survival and recovery. This is why Ipswich Hospital’s helipad is vital in emergency care because lifesaving treatment is available immediately after landing in an air ambulance.”
Since 2009, the HELP Appeal has been providing significant grants to fund life-saving helipads at Major Trauma Centres and key A&E Hospitals around England and Scotland.
