UK Ikara Leander class

1972

The Ikara (missile thrower) rocket-launched torpoedo system was originally intended to be fitted to Britains CVA-01 carrier and its Type 82 escorts - all of which bar HMS Bristol (Type 82) were cancelled. With 8 sets of Ikara launchers in storage, the Royal Navy brought forward plans to equip some of its successful Leander Class frigates in a mid life refit. Six refits carried out at Devonport Dockyard, 1 at Portsmouth Dockyard and 1 at Chatham Dockyard. Refits began in June 1970 (HMS Leander, see unit events) and the last (HMS Dido) re-entered service in 1978.
