129th is part of the California Air National Guard. Along the 130 RQS (MC-130P) and 131 RQS (PJs) forms the 129th Rescue Wing.

Between 1955 and 1963 was a Troop Carrier unit.
In 1968 became 129th Special Operations Squadron ( 129 SOS )
In 1975 is redesignated 129th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron ( 129 ARRS ).
In 1989 is redesignated 129th Air Rescue Squadron ( 129 ARS ).
In 1992 is redesignated 129th Rescue Squadron ( 129 RQS )

From 2016 started receiving upgraded former Army UH-60L (Operational Loss Replacement)

In February 2025 received first two HH-60W of 6 to be completed by 2026
