The 1st Aviation Regiment of the Australian Army was established on April 26, 1966, initially named the 1st Division Army Aviation Regiment. This designation was subsequently altered to the 1st Aviation Regiment on March 31, 1967. During its formative years, the regiment incorporated both fixed-wing and rotary aircraft, reflecting the diverse aviation requirements of the Army.

The primary function of the 1st Aviation Regiment is to furnish aerial reconnaissance and fire support to the Australian Army. For this, a significant restructuring of the regiment occurred in late 2004 with the reception of the Eurocopter Tiger armed reconnaissance helicopter (ARH). After long delays, the Tiger achieved its full operational capability on April 18, 2016.

Key Engagements and Operations

- East Timor (INTERFET, Operations Stabilise/Warden, UNTAET & Operation Tanager): The regiment played a role in the international efforts to restore peace and stability in East Timor.

- Solomon Islands (Operation Anode/RAMSI): Members of the 171st Operational Support Squadron, 1st Aviation Regiment, deployed to the Solomon Islands with UH-1H "Huey" Iroquois helicopters for reconnaissance, transport, and medical evacuation duties as part of the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands.

- NSW Flood Assistance: The regiment has been involved in domestic civil assistance operations, such as flood relief efforts in New South Wales.

- Operation Gold (Sydney Olympics): The regiment provided support during the Sydney Olympics.

- Exercise Talisman Sabre: This ongoing series of multinational military exercises regularly involves the 1st Aviation Regiment, providing opportunities to enhance interoperability with allied forces and test new capabilities. Recently, this has included training with the new Apache helicopters and participating in joint precision fires sequences.

- Exercise Griffin Eagle: This exercise has seen the 1st Aviation Regiment deploy a squadron of ARH Tigers to the United States to train alongside US Marine Corps counterparts, testing logistics processes and developing attack and reconnaissance aviation capabilities in austere environments.

As of 2025, the regiment is undergoing a transition to the AH-64E Apache helicopter, with the initial consignment of 29 Apaches expected to arrive in Australia in the near future. This transition also entails the relocation of the 1st Aviation Regiment from Darwin to RAAF Base Townsville.
