UK 666 Squadron (Volunteers)

1945–2009

Formed at RAF Andover on 5 Mar 1945 as an RCAF unit, it was to be the last AOP Squadron formed in WWII.
In its preparation to move to Soest, 3 REGT divested itself of 666 Squadron to become an independent unit in 1976. It retired its 6 Sioux on 22 Feb 1978. Moved to Netheravon 1986 and disbanded there on 1 Apr 2009.
Based at RAF Topcliffe from early 1970s in support of 24 Brigade. Flew 6 Scout AH1 and 6 Sioux. Shared hanger 5 with 15 flight AAC who had 4 Beaver. Known as the Scottish Squadron from its late RAF days. Was part of 3 regiment AAC based at Netheravon. Believe they moved to Dishforth shortly after 24 brigade moved into RAF Topcliffe.
Flew Sioux AH1 at least from March 1975.
666 Squadron was deactivated on 01Nov78. It was reformed as 666(TA)Squadron on 26Apr86. It flew Scout AH1 between Apr86-Mar94 and Gazelle AH1 from 1994-2009.
